WHAT NOT TO WEAR: baby edition

poor Winnie the Pooh. Such a great guy, but mommies are not into him these days.

We asked our Facebook page about what types of clothing they refuse to put on their children. While this is a very subjective topic, and I don’t imagine we all share the same opinions on these styles, here are the things some mommies named as styles they don’t want their babies to wear.1. Camoflague. It’s too early in life to draft our little ones into battle, I gather. though it’s been a recent trend, lots of of you don’t want your kids sporting camo.

source

2. Bikinis. No “likes” on Facebook for the teeny weeny swimsuits.

source

3. References to mommy and Daddy. Mommy’s little Sailor above a picture of a boat? Wild about daddy with a cheetah print? You people say, “No thank you.” especially not this remarkably graphic tribute to Daddy’s relationship to the baby. Umm.

4. pastel animals. Also, neon animals. Also, neon cars. Ok, this one is pretty subjective. I think what we’re getting at here is general cheesiness. Or maybe just ugliness? I feel bad selecting a product to illustrate.

5. Turtlenecks. We don’t need to say more. but we will. San Francisco mommy Val says, “Because a baby shouldn’t look like Steve jobs in a tiny black mock turtleneck onesie.”

6. Announcements that this baby just might be a jerk.  I Heart Boobies, little Monster, call Me Princess, lady Killer, and other artificial big-headed claims are rejected.

7. writing on the butt. What’s worse than a onesie that brags “Little Diva”? One that says it on the tush.

8. Skulls. lots of mommies find them creepy. enough disagree that sincere Co makes diapers with skulls, and I gotten them for my nephew because I knew his mommy would dig ’em. Oh well. find these at Target. Or don’t if you hate skulls.

9. NFL, NASCAR, NBA licensed gear. Some parents are uneasy with their child functioning as a billboard for multi-million dollar businesses. That includes Disney. fair enough.

Bonus discussion topic: Overalls. Wait, overalls are cute, aren’t they? Or you people hate overalls? I can’t tell.

No matter how much you agree or disagree with the picks above, I can guarantee that by the time our kids are grown, we’ll think it was all charming — even NASCAR turtlenecks with neon animal-themed overalls.

A Day At Wimbledon with Robinsons

Saturday was quite the exciting day as my best pal Rebecca and I, hotfooted it to Wimbledon for a special day with Robinsons, a brand I’ve worked with for years.

Robinsons had invited us for a day in their suite at Wimbledon and kindly gave us Centre Court tickets to view the matches on that day too. We caught Ernests Gulbis play Novak Djokovic as well as the women’s singles beforehand with Agnieszka Radwańska and Timea Bacsinszky playing. The atmosphere is calm but no less electric than you’d think of on screen with the audience mesmerised, viewing with baited breath.

Tennis is such a stunning game and one I’ve played because I was 6 years old when I famously asked my teacher how long it would take me to get to Wimbledon. Well, it took 30 years!!!

Here in a Centre Court selfie!

Attending felt even much more special as I was there just a few weeks ago as I’d been filming with Tim Henman OBE, interviewing him about his inspirational profession and my family and I along with a group of bloggers, were also privy to a trip behind-the-scenes at Wimbledon too. You can read all about it HERE.

Robinsons has a rich and long history with Wimbledon-a whopping 82 years long history in fact, with their lemon barley water first being created in the changing rooms at the championships in 1932!

Eric Smedley Hodgson was the creator behind the drink. He concocted it using water, barley, lemon juice and sugar. It went down so well that he was invited back to every game during tournament. In 1935, Robinsons Barley Water went into commercial production and returned to Wimbledon by the umpire’s chair, where it has been each year since.

The lemon barley is my preferred flavour too and it kept us amazing on the day in between bubbles!!

Robinsons remains one of the few brand names permitted on Centre Court and what we love so much about them is all their products include real fruit in every drop.

So, what did we eat and drink?

The feasting in full swing. It was beautiful to meet Harriet from Toby and Roo.

Don’t hate me but along with delicious Robinsons, we delighted in champagne, Pimms, a divine lunch of blue cheese and beetroot salad and poached salmon with crème fraîche and new potatoes, plus afternoon tea after viewing the tennis… It was such a fantastic and much appreciated treat as I had just completed the first draft of my book #Mumboss (all 70,000 words of it) making it the ideal way to celebrate this enormous milestone.

What did I wear?

This spectacular soft lace dress with pleats of course (well, it was Wimbledon) c/o Jacques Vert. So effortlessly chic, I paired it with a Ralph Lauren jacket (above), shows I developed myself (ooh la la) and tassel earrings from Zara.

What an ace day! Wimble-done! Sorry (I know my father will find these puns funny at least!)

GIFT IDEA: keep YOUR CHEESINESS TO yourself

I stumbled on something else that might make a amazing gift for a parent. I used to sell these silver necklaces at my store: they had two different origami papers on each side, so it was like two necklaces in one, depending which side you wore. The ones I sold had a monkey on one side and pink flowers on the other. They are really reliable and beautiful. So, I looked at the web site and now she is doing custom-made jewelry incorporating your own personal photos.

I think the most appealing is one that has the pretty paper on one side, and a picture of your kid on the other- so you don’t actually sit there displaying your kid on your chest. You can wear it paper-side out, but you have a cute picture close by (and close to your heart, awww) in case someone asks or you miss him too much!

Who’s Karen? Oh yeah, now I remember!

A WEEK IN KAUAI? KINDA SORTA.

lucky me
I just got back from a week on the North shore of Hawaii with my husband, two sons, mommy and step-dad and I’d be absolutely lying if I said it wasn’t great. It was awesome. The weather was in the mid-eighties all the time; when it rained it was fun or refreshing; nobody was wacked in the face with a surfboard; and both Milo and I stayed relatively pale and un-sunburnt.

Hanalei Bay is a gigantic sandbox

And did I mention that we were there with grandparents? Wow. Alec and I took pleasure in a full day away from the kids, one afternoon, one after-dinner dessert, and one dinner (but who’s counting?!).

Right before we missed the morning boat ride

Ok, but seriously, what am I doing wrong?
Now that I have all that mushy gratitude out of the way, let me get ideal down to it. What is the secret to having a fun holiday with a 3 year old and a 1 year old? Does it even matter where you go and what you do? At this age, they don’t have any patience or common sense.

Too rainy to hike Waimea Canyon. Oh well.

I resisted my impulse to plan the crap out of the trip in development and concern I lost my chance to be prepared. In the effort to opt for the flow, we missed boats, mis-timed lighthouse open hours and drove back and forth a ton between various activities and attractions.

Best stuff of the trip
I know if you ask Milo what he liked best, he would say “roos” — his favorite thing was clearly chasing chickens and roosters. He wouldn’t go to bed until you assured him that the fowl was no longer frolicking.

If you ask Holden what he liked best, he would say the airplane. He was terrified to go in the water, even up to his ankles, until the last day preferring instead to dig in the world’s largest sandbox (AKA the beach).

As for kid-friendly activities and restaurants, I would be hard-pressed to give you much advice, but let me try anyway:

Best beach: Lydgate beach with it’s waist-high on a 3 year old rock enclosed fish filled enclaves.
Best burger: Bubba’s Burger in Kapa’a. I thought it was fine, but Holden liked his first dining experience the best and kept wanting to go back.
Best vacationer trap experience that’s better with kids: Boat-ride to fern Grotto. This is a very lame boat ride with a short hike through plants with some standard Hawaiian singing and dancing… which is good especially if you’re too young for luaus. Also, we took pleasure in feeding the birds for $.50 at the Smith Nature preserve when we missed the boat the first day.
Best of the best: Wild chickens running everywhere. find an open lawn away from driving cars and let your clueless toddler run themselves straight for an early nap.

I never did find a particularly kid-friendly swimming pool. any individual else have any (young) family favorites on Kauai?

POCO DOLCE: SPICY sweet gift FOR YOUR favorite chocolate lover

Oh dear readers, in case you were wondering, this is what to send me the avid chocolate lover, read on!

My favorites are the spice ones | photo via Poco Dolce

I was going to buy my step-dad a $50 box of Scharffen Berger cocoa powder to feed his chocolate habits. He currently likes to add Hershey’s syrup to his every coffee and keeps a squirt bottle in his brief case. but I realized that unless you’re a cocoa or mocha fiend/snob like my husband, it would just be a very sad waste of cacao beans and space in his pantry.

So then my mind wandered over to these little gems that Sunny introduced me to and I thought I should pass along the find to you.

If you want to buy a truly decadent chocolate gift for the spicy person in your life, you absolutely must get some of these $$ chocolate tiles. Flavors like Aztec Chile and Burnt Caramel or Ginger are infused into the dark chocolate and I’m getting a little droolly just thinking about it.

Bittersweet chocolate combined with the finest ingredients from roasted almond to bits of burnt caramel toffee and finished with grey sea salt. Our tiles are made by hand in our San Francisco kitchen and packed in our signature blue box. from bits of burnt caramel toffee to roasted almonds.

Spicy sweet. and it’s at the stupid price point that is crazy to buy yourself and only Santa can afford.

WEAR FLEECE

My friend at work, Melanie, gave me this tip for parents in the professional world. It’s sorta the opposite approach of Heather’s suggestion to keep your shirt off.

Pick an old large fleece and designate it as your pre-work cover up. get dressed for work in your cashmere sweater set, dry-cleaned blazer, or whatever your uniform is, and then put the fleece on top.

Now get your last minute baby snuggles in without worrying about spit up or banana goo on your shirt. head for the door and remove the fleece on your way.

If baby barfs on your pants, sorry, can’t help you.
